Summer Intern Series: Saying Goodbye

We don’t know where the time went, but summer has gone as quickly as it arrived. As JWT New York interns finish up their last projects and head back to school, they take away new skills and a lasting network with both each other and the agency. Before we say goodbye and wish them the best in their future endeavors, we checked in one last time with interns Kevin, Katie and Rachael to hear about their final week at JWT. Plus check out a bonus video put together by JWT  New York interns about their favorite memories from the program.

It is the last day of my internship at JWT and I cannot believe how fast this summer has gone by. My time interning as a Strategic Planner has been an incredible and rewarding experience.

One thing that is great about a JWT internship is that they make sure you have the ability to contribute to the challenging and interesting projects they are faced with. While at JWT I have put together competitive analysis decks for clients, gone to focus groups, have written a creative brief, and have worked on other interesting assignments. These were all such rewarding projects to work on and I greatly appreciated the input I was able to contribute to them.

But by far, one of the most rewarding aspects about interning at a place like JWT is the people that work here. The people that work at JWT are a real team. I have had the opportunity to work with extraordinary individuals that have not hesitated to teach and share their experiences and insights about the advertising industry with me.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to intern at JWT and would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn from the best to apply to the JWT internship program.

Kevin Chenault, Planning Intern

Last Thursday, I participated in the JWT intern community service day volunteering for City Harvest in the East Bronx. It was a valuable experience in drawing upon my ability to reach out and connect with individuals very different than I. While weighing, bagging and distributing hundreds and hundreds of pounds of fresh produce, I made an effort to converse with every person that came my way- to learn something about them.

My observations from handing out sweet potatoes surfaced yesterday in our Brand Intelligence Intern Seminar. Columbia professor and Director of Brand Intelligence at JWT, Mark Truss, lectured on what it means to discover insights and apply them to marketing programs. Truss stated how we are not logical, rational thinking organisms, rather we are emotional unconscious feeling machines. When you revert it back to how people perceive and digest advertisements, we buy things that make us feel a certain way (Truss on Sutherland). We see the products as we are and not as how they are, a lesson which is not too different than what I learned during my City Harvest experience. To some, we gave out a product from the dirt and for others, we provided a means of sustenance. When you examine the world through different perceptions and remove your own personal biases, that is when you actually begin to see (Truss on Thoreau).

Katie D’Andrea, Account Management Intern

I find it hard to believe that the summer is over. My 12 weeks at JWT are coming to a close and I feel unwilling to let them go. As exciting as it will be to return to school on August 13th, it will be equally upsetting to leave JWT on August 10th.

In such a short period of time I feel as if I have accomplished a lot. Between organizing excel files, compiling social media analytic reports, creating a Cannes summary deck, along with numerous other projects, I have managed to tweak my skill set by improving on my weaknesses and utilizing my strengths.

JWT has helped me grow and has made me confident that no matter where the job market takes me I will be able to succeed.

Thanks JWT for the opportunities you have given me, my fellow interns and for letting me judge the office Olympics! Go Team Interns!

Rachael Podbielak, Corporate Communications Intern

This year, one of our very own JWT production interns, Mario Garza, created a unique video peeking into the world of a JWT intern. Mario used his extra time to put together a script, shoot the scenes, and edit the footage resulting in an entertaining five-minute video. Take a moment to sit back and learn about JWT intern life.

Featured interns:

Alex Morrison, Strategic Planning & Research
Stella Continanza, Account Management
Mallory Ladenheim, Global Talent
