Summer Intern Series: End of the Road

As the days get shorter in New York and the weather gets colder, it’s evident that summer is transitioning into fall. Sadly, the end of the season also means the end of the road for our impressive intern group at JWT New York. Over the past 10 weeks, the class of over 30 interns were able to make major contributions to future campaigns, learn from some of the industry’s best and even give back to the New York community by volunteering at City Harvest. We caught up with Carl, Jason and Lucie during their busy final week to hear about their overall experience at JWT.

Carl Nightingale, Strategic Planning Intern

Wow, it’s now the last week of my internship at JWT and it’s hard to believe that nine weeks ago I was just starting out in the world of planning. Over the past few months, I have been able to complete two consumer pathways and I am currently finishing up a third one. We presented the first two to the client last week with our key inflection points—inflection points represent areas of the consumer journey where we feel there is an opportunity to change behavior to improve our brand. They can range from small insights about where products are sold at retail, all the way up to large-scale prospects for the brand to change the category. The client was in agreement with the majority of our inflection points, and asked us to dig further into a few of them to get a better understanding of the opportunity that exists, and what it would take to capture this opening. It was really rewarding to see all this work pay off and provide real value to the client.

I can’t believe that it’s already time to say goodbye and prepare to go back to school, but I really look forward to keeping in touch with all my JWT friends and seeing where our campaign leads in the coming months. It has been an amazing summer as I have learned so much about the advertising industry and the role of a planner within this business. JWT has provided me with a one-of-a-kind experience that will stay with me through the school year and beyond.

Jason Langer, Art Buying and Print Production Intern

It’s been 10 weeks here at JWT, which means this amazing internship is sadly coming to an end. From playing on the company softball team to volunteering at City Harvest, my summer at JWT has been filled with so many unique experiences. One highlight that stands out in particular is when I had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and see the process of a photo-shoot for one of our clients.

My time at JWT has gone beyond the two departments in which I have been interning for. I worked with Luiza Soares, a fellow intern, to edit the footage of the Gay Pride Event hosted by JWT Differenter. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with Keni Thacker on a video for an upcoming JWT Ethos campaign.

Whenever I was free, I was able to meet with people in various departments throughout JWT to learn more about the agency as a whole. I could not be happier with the time I spent here. I have established so many great relationships, especially with the other interns that were as fortunate as me this summer to be a part of the JWT family.

Lucie Fink, Branded Content & Entertainment Intern

Where has the summer gone?! It feels like just yesterday my fellow interns and I were sitting by the JWT reception desk introducing ourselves and smiling awkwardly at one another. Somehow ten weeks have passed and now I’m here—preparing for my final presentations and checking items off of my “end of internship checklist.”

These last few weeks have been my busiest yet. As a branded content & entertainment intern, a huge part of my job has been brainstorming branded entertainment pitches (TV shows, web series, etc.) and storing these ideas in a file as a type of creative portfolio. For my final week at JWT, I’ll be pouring all of my time and energy into a few of my strongest ideas, aiming to pitch these projects to an account team and to hopefully sell some work!

Although I’m just an intern, it’s not too far fetched to think that the account team that I pitch to will maybe invest in my idea. Standing out at JWT—an office full of innovative thinkers—involves taking risks and pushing your ideas forward boldly. Even if none of my pitches make it through, I know I’ve gained invaluable experience in the process.

I’ve always loved entertainment. As a young girl, I would come up with a new show practically every night and would force my family to watch as I performed for them. Whether it was a how-to cooking show or an amusing magic performance, developing show ideas has always brought me to my happy place. JWT has given me the opportunity to unleash my creativity in an environment where it’s actually needed, and I finally feel like my mind is being put to good use. Thank you, JWT, for an incredible summer!
